I started painting in 2015 after observing art and collecting mental images,
both visual and aural, for over 60 years. The influences are many.
My first recollection of serious painting stemmed from a program in second grade.
Every two weeks throughout the school year the teacher would hand out to each
student a post card size picture of a famous painting, sculpture or building.
I remember very clearly that “Starry Night” confused and stunned me.
How could this be real? How could the wind shape the clouds like that?
Yet the image was fascinating. The blues and yellows stood out.
Shortly after that my father purchased an oil painting from an adult art student
named Labonski (first name I believe is Michael). The small painting shows five
African men standing in a line facing left. Two wear turbans, one a cap,
two are bare headed. There is a base gray covered by salmon pink background.
I am looking at that painting as I write this.
That same year, my first exposure to serious music was a class trip to hear
Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf”. The sound of the symphony was powerful.
I still think of it in dark shades with flashes of red, blue, and a little white.
At home, the first record I recall was “The Ink Spots in Hi-Fi”.
Based on the music, the colors were black, white and blue.
